  • The aim of diabetes treatment is to keep blood glucose level as near to normal as possible.

Lifestyle changes: Successful diabetes treatment depends on coordinating regular blood glucose testing with lifestyle modifications (e.g. diet, exercise, cessation of smoking, etc.) and pharmaceutical agents that regulate plasma glucose levels.

Care of patients with T2DM requires empathy by the doctor and an understanding of the patient's needs. More information about lifestyle changes and healthier living for people with diabetes can be found under www.diabetes.org

In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops making insulin or makes so little insulin that patients need to take insulin to live. Some people with type 2 diabetes can manage their diabetes with healthy eating and exercise. However, the doctor may need to also prescribe oral medications (pills) and/or insulin to help patients meet your target blood glucose levels.
