- Blood glucose monitoring is heavily dependent on the type of diabetes in question as well as varying from person to person. Insulin treated patients should monitor blood glucose >4 times a day, most commonly fasting, before meals, and before bed. These patients may also benefit from postprandial testing, so they may be testing ~8 times a day. T2DM patients may not need to monitor their plasma glucose at all, but in those who show poor glycaemic control or are using insulin it may be appropriate to test several times a day.
- Other tests, such as OGTT, FPG and RPG are diagnostic tools, rather than measures for monitoring how effectively blood glucose is controlled once it has been diagnosed.
- PPG and FPG are blood glucose control parameters that can be self-monitored by the patient.
- HbA1C testing requires specialist laboratory facilities and measurement of this parameter is conducted when the diabetes patient visits their healthcare professional.
