Diabetes - Risk Factors

  • Diabetes - Risk Factors

    • Lifestyle

      - Diet is an important risk factor in the development of T2DM.
      - It has been demonstrated that a high-fibre, low-fat diet predicts long-term weight loss and decreased risk of T2DM.
      - Results of longitudinal studies suggest that depression, general emotional stress and anxiety, sleeping problems, anger, and hostility are associated with an increased risk for T2DM.
      - There are conflicting results for an association between childhood neglect, life events, work stress and the risk of T2DM.
      - Smoking is known to increase the risk of developing T2DM.
      - Exercise appears to reduce the development of T2DM even after adjusting for body mass index.
      - Exercise plays a major role in the prevention and control of insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes, and diabetes-related health complications.
  • Diet, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle can increase the incidence of T2DM.
