Diabetes - Symptoms

The T1DM patients are: Young; Typically lean ( but not always ); Frequently have family history; Most patients are White. 

The main symptoms of T1DM are:

1.     Abnormal thirst and dry mouth (polydipsia).

2.     Massive urine production (polyuria).

3.     Weakness, extreme tiredness/lack of energy.

4.     Unexplained rapid weight loss.

5.     Constant hunger.

6.     Slow-healing wounds and recurrent infections.

7.     Abdominal pain.

8.     Dry, itchy skin.

9.     Blurred vision; Sweet smelling breath.

T1DM has to be treated immediately and in the long term with insulin to avoid serious complications.

·         The T2DM patients are :

·          

o    Middle aged (>40 years).

o    Typically overweight/obese.

o    Often have family history.

o    Blacks.

o    Hispanic.

o    Asians at higher risk.

·         People with type 2 diabetes may remain unaware of their illness for a long time because symptoms may take years to appear or be recognised, during which time the body is being damaged by excess blood glucose. Many people are diagnosed only when complications of diabetes become evident.

 

In the early stages of T2DM the symptoms can be so mild as to go unnoticed, and almost half of all patients have had diabetes for months or years before diagnosis. A considerable percentage of people diagnosed with T2DM already present some form of tissue damage.

  1. o    §  Blurred vision.
  2. §  Cuts or sores that take a long time to heal.
  3. §  Itching skin or yeast infections.
  4. §  Excessive thirst and Dry mouth.
  5. §  Frequent urination.
  6. Leg pain.
